Alpina Proves Adventure and Fashion Can Go Together with the AlpinerX Smartwatch

by in News .

Alpina has shown off its latest smartwatch at Baselworld 2018. The AlpinerX is a rugged smartwatch that’s endlessly customisable, with some 3,200 colour combinations available online. It’s also got a great feature-set. Here’s what you need to know:

Alpina AlpinerX

Casio recently proved adventure and fashion can go together with the WSD-F20 smartwatch, and Alpina has done the same with the AlpinerX. We wouldn’t go so far as to call the AlpinerX a beauty, but it is certainly good-looking and remarkably rugged.

Incredibly, there are 3,200 colour combinations to choose from. You can build your own on the Alpina website, or you can choose from a range of pre-configured designs. The AlpinerX is water-resistant to 100m / 330ft and is shock-proof.

Of course, this rugged smartwatch is all about functionality and to that end it boasts a huge list of features. The small display on the lower half of the watch face shows what mode you’re in and you press down on the crown to access different features. These include an altitude monitor, compass, UV indicator and thermometer. The most interesting feature of these is the UV indicator, which we’ve never seen before on a smartwatch. It basically warns you if you get too much sun - handy on mountains.

Connect your iPhone or Android smartphone to the AlpinerX, and you’ll get vibrate notifications on your wrist. You can also sync your activity to your phone.

The AlpinerX tracks steps and calories burned. That’s it for fitness, so if you’re looking for a rugged device for running with, we recommend you look elsewhere. The AlpinerX also lacks GPS, something we see as a huge and unforgiveable downside on a smartwatch that markets itself as adventurous. This is justified somewhat by the excellent battery life though - this smartwatch has a 24-month battery life with normal use.

Pricing and Availability

The Alpina AlpinerX is available from retailers now for around $900. For the price, you’re getting an extremely well-made smartwatch from a reputable brand. If you must have GPS, then we recommend you check out the Casio WSD-F20.
