Apple Watch 4th best selling gadget 2017

by in News .

Apple is the biggest technology company in the world, and they are also one of the most secretive. A case in point – they never release sales figures for any of their products, so it’s up to market intelligence firms to track the market, predict it, and interpret it.

One such intelligence firm is GBH Insights, who tracked gadget sales through 2017. They found that the Apple Watch was the fourth best-selling gadget of 2017, with approximately 20 million units sold, generating around $7 billion in sales. They provided their findings in a chart to USA today, who published the results here.

The fifth best-selling product, the excellent Nintendo Switch console, sold approximately 5 million units less than the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch was soundly beaten by the number one best-seller, the iPhone, which sold 223 million units, as well as Samsung's Galaxy smartphone line in second place, which sold 33 million units, and Amazon’s Echo range in third place, which sold 24 million units.

The news that Apple sold 20 million Apple Watches in 2017 should not come as too much of a shock. Smartwatch shipments totalled 31.6 million units in 2017, according to research firm IDC, and Apple controls roughly 40 per cent of the market.

Furthermore, research firm Canalys reported last year that Apple Watch sales were up 12 per cent year over year. Taking that into account, next year the Apple Watch could see sales figures that close in on the Amazon Echo range. Overall, 20 million sales in one year is a heck of a lot for a device that many analysts predicted would flop.

Could 2018 be an even better year for the Apple Watch? Rumours suggest the Series 4 might have an EKG sensor, although most people we talk to want better battery life, better Siri functionality, and a circular option with an OLED display.
