Looking for a really great outdoorsy smartwatch? For the last few years, Casio's been on a roll with that. The WSD-F10 and WSD-20 that followed were (and still are) among the best rugged Wear OS smartwatches on the market.
Now though there's a new model in town, and as you might predict it follows Casio's familiar naming scheme. It's called the WSD-F30.
The Casio WSD-F30 takes our crown for the best rugged smartwatch of 2018. It's got innovative battery modes which can stretch out well over a week of use, and an innovative dual-layer 1.2-ich display. Here's what you need to know:
The 1.2-inch 390 x 390-pixel colour OLED screen is topped with a power efficient reflective LCD which can be turned on manually or by the watch automatically to preserve precious battery life. The OLED is the screen you use for everyday tasks and it's bright, colourful and pin sharp. It shows off Wear OS perfectly.
Wear OS ships as the latest version, which has a new notification centre and UI improvements. Wear OS is now as good to use as Apple's WatchOS.
Water resistant to 5ATM or 50-metres, you can bathe and shower with the WSD-F30 no problem. With GPS, GLONASS, NFC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, an air pressure/altimeter, accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass, it packs in plenty of connectivity and tracking features too. There is an omission though - there's no heart rate tracker. A downside perhaps, but every smartwatch has one.
It makes up for it with its ruggedness. Casio has tested their new smartwatch to the US Military standard MIL-STD-810G, and it's approved to that standard, which really is as tough as it gets for a smartwatch. It should also fit under your fleece or jacket easier than the WSD-F20 because it's 3.9 mm narrower and 0.4 mm slimmer.
The WSD-F30 also comes with a suite of unique apps, which include ViewRanger (for navigation), Hole19 (for golf), Glassy (for surfing and water sports), Fishbrain (for fishing), MySwimPro (for swimming), Equilab (for horse riding), Exercise Timer, Zombies, Run! (a fitness game) and Ski Tracks (for skiing). These apps are some of the best in the business, particularly Ski Tracks which is great on the slopes.
Pricing and availability
The Casio WSD-F30 is available now through Casio official stockists priced at $550. That is expensive, but you can't get a more rugged smartwatch for the money. Colour options include blue, orange and black.
