Touchscreen? Check. GPS? Check. Heart-rate monitor? Check. No, we’re not listing features of the $399 Apple Watch. Amazingly, we’re listing features of the Huami Amazfit Bip, a smartwatch that costs $99 and boasts a stonking 45-day battery life.
The Huami Amazfit Bip
It’s easy to become disillusioned by price. What does cheap really mean? $200 smartwatches and $100 smartwatches could be considered cheap to somebody with a thousand dollars. Wherever you are with your money, you’ll probably agree that some things offer value, and some things don’t.
A case in point is the Huami Amazfit Bip, a new smartwatch that offers it all for less than the cost of your monthly groceries.
The Huami Amazfit Bip is an Apple Watch lookalike straight out of China. It features a 176×176 LCD reflective display and a plastic case. In isolation, it looks like any other cheap, rubbish smartwatch. But it isn’t. It crams a GPS + GLONASS module, heart-rate sensor, 3-axis accelerometer, barometer and compass into its shell. It’s even got an IP68 water resistance rating, making it suitable for swimming.
Best of all, it has a 45-day battery life. Yes, you read that right - this smartwatch has a 45-day battery life, with a touchscreen. And yes, you also get GPS and a heart rate monitor for less than $100. What’s not to love?
As with all smartwatches, the Amazfit Bip has multi-sport tracking. It runs its own proprietary OS, which offers detailed running, walking, cycling and swimming data on the wrist. The addition of GPS means you can track all your workout routes.
Weighing in at 1.1 ounces, it’s lightweight too. It comes on a comfortable silicone strap, and it’s available in a few different colours to suit your taste. The standard colour is Onyx Black (black case, black strap), but you can also pre-order 3 new colours which will begin shipping in March. These are Cinnabar Red, White Cloud, and Kokoda Green.
Pricing and Availability
The Huami Amazfit Bip is manufactured by Xiaomi, a Chinese technology brand perhaps best known in the States’ for the Mi Band, a fitness tracker. We mention this, because some stores list Xiaomi as the OEM while others do not. Whatever the case, the Amazfit Bip will set you back $99 from the official store, which is an incredible price for what you get. In fact, we’d go as far as to say no other smartwatch offers so much for so little.
