The Montblanc Summit 2 is the first smartwatch with Qualcomm’s next-gen chip

by in News .

Luxury timepiece maker Montblanc (you might know them better for their pens) have revealed their latest smartwatch, and it’s the first to feature the Qualcomm’s new chipset.

The Montblanc Summit 2 has a healthy spec bump over the first-gen model. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor, which uses a dual chip setup to maximise battery life. The benefit of running that 3100 chipset is the Summit 2 has a week-long battery life, or four days with intense use.

That processor is paired with 1GB of RAM, which is as high as you get for a smartwatch right now (most run 512 or 768MB). There’s 8GB of storage too, which is double what you find on most smartwatches.

Suffice to say, the Summit 2 is fast. Liquid fast, in fact. It runs Wear OS 2.1 (the latest version) and boasts a glorious 1.2-inch AMOLED display with 327 PPI, which is plenty for a display so small. The 42mm case is made to Montblanc’s exquisite standards, and there’s a lovely rotating crown and two programmable buttons.

GPS, NFC and a heart-rate monitor feature, and there’s a 50M water resistance rating, making it suitable for showering with.

Montblanc is offering a variety of case finishes to suit any taste. These include a DLC coating (satin black), bicolour steel (black bezel, steel case), steel (steel bezel, steel case) and titanium, which has a $100 premium. There’re also nine straps to choose from, including a range of very fetching sport straps and a Milanese.

Pricing and availability

Overall, the Montblanc Summit is a fine smartwatch but it’ll cost you. Prices start at $995 (DLC, Bicolour, Steel) and $1,095 for the titanium model. You can buy yours from a Montblanc boutique, or through an authorised dealer.

The only other luxury alternative at that price is the Tag Heuer Connected, but it’s running an older processor and is due an update soon.
