The Samsung Gear Sport is a Smaller, More Comfortable Fitness Smartwatch

by in News .

The way we see it, any smartwatch that classes itself as a ‘fitness smartwatch’ must pass a simple, but important test: It must be comfortable to wear. To be comfortable when out running, lifting weights at the gym or anything else, a smartwatch needs to be small. If a smartwatch isn’t small, then it’s going to get in the way of your workouts and hinder your progress.

Over the years, we’ve seen a fair few enormous smartwatches tout themselves as suitable for fitness activities. An example being the Samsung Galaxy Gear S3, which has a 46mm face. At that size, a smartwatch is uncomfortable to wear when working out, and when you add perspiration, things get really uncomfortable.

We’re pleased to see then that Samsung has recognised this issue, and seemingly solved it with the launch of a new smartwatch called the Samsung Gear Sport.

The Samsung Gear Sport

With a 42.9mm face and a weight of 67g including the strap, the Gear Sport is tiny compared to the chunky Gear S3. It boasts some great specs too, such as a 1.2” 360 x 360 Super AMOLED display with a Gorilla Glass crystal, and a water resistance rating to 5ATM / 50-metres. It has even retained the classic and hugely useful rotating bezel of the S3, which offers a highly intuitive way to navigate applications and Tizen OS.

The only downside to the Gear Sport is Tizen OS. Tizen OS has been heavily developed and chopped and changed over the years. It is now heavily fitness-focused, which is fine, but the number of apps available pales in comparison to Android Wear. If you can look past that, however, this is a fantastic fitness smartwatch.

Thanks to its to 5ATM / 50-metre water resistance rating, the Gear Sport can be used to track swimming in addition to running and cycling. It offers calorie tracking and has all necessary tracking modules for accuracy, such as an accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer and a heart-rate monitor. Essentially, it includes all the same sensors and features as the Samsung Gear S3 but wraps them all up in a smaller, more comfortable fitness smartwatch.

Interested? The Gear Sport is available in Black or Blue, and comes with a colour-matching silicone strap. However, it has regular lugs, so you can use any watch strap you like. Prices have yet to be confirmed by Samsung, but we expect this smartwatch to be sold for around $350.00 when it goes on sale. Some places may have it for closer to $300.
