If you are looking for an affordable fitness tracker that offers more than basic step and calorie counting, it pays to look beyond the realms of Android Wear.
A case in point? The new Suunto 3, a smartwatch that offers adaptive training plans and personalised workout data. Launched earlier this year, it offers features other smartwatches at its price point do not. Here’s what you need to know about it:
This unique fitness smartwatch runs software created in collaboration with Firstbeat Technologies, Suunto’s long-term partner in sports sciences. It automatically recognises when you begin your workouts and automatically creates 7-day workout plans for you by analysing your workout milestones. If you take a day off or have a lazy day, the watch will automatically adapt your workouts to suit your lifestyle.
The result is a smartwatch that seamlessly blends into your life while being undeniably helpful. Of course, it also offers provides activity tracking for steps and calories which you can view in real-time on the smartwatch display. Speaking of which, the display isn’t a touchscreen. You navigate the software via hardware buttons on the side of the case and the screen itself isn’t the best with a low resolution. That may be a deal-breaker for some, as the lure of gorgeous displays on Android Wear devices is hard to resist.
If you can look past the low-red display, the Suunto 3 is a good fitness smartwatch. It’s water resistant to 30 metres and has built-in sport modes for walking, running, swimming, cycling, gym training and much more. When it goes on sale, it will be available in four different colourways - Gold, All Black, Ocean, Sakura and Black.
Pricing and Availability
The Suunto 3 will go on sale this Spring in the US on the Suunto website. Prices will start from $247.00 for models with a stainless-steel bezel. Models with a gold bezel will start from $284. It isn’t clear if the Suunto 3 will be picked up by retailers, although other Suunto models such as the Suunto Spartan are available through the likes of Amazon.
