When TAG Heuer launched their first smartwatch two years ago, not even they could have predicted it would be so popular. At $1,800, the Tag Heuer Connected had a retail price that was borderline cheeky compared to the competition, and yet, 56,000 of them sold worldwide. In simple terms, that’s three-times the sales Tag Heuer expected, which isn’t bad at all, and especially so when you consider the price tag.
The Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45
And so, Tag Heuer is back this year with an all-new smartwatch that it hopes will mimic the success of its predecessor. The Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 has a reduced-price tag of $1,650 over its predecessor, and one heck of a selling point: It has modular parts, which means it’s upgradeable and customisable. The straps can be changed (as you would expect), but so too can the lugs, buckles and the movement itself.
Indeed, it’s the movement’s modularity we are most interested in. You see, it can be swapped out for a mechanical movement to transform the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 into a traditional Swiss Made timepiece. That means that when the Connected Modular 45’s technology becomes outdated (that is, its connectivity and fitness-tracking capabilities), the Connected Modular 45 can be transformed into a luxury timepiece easily.
If that sounds interesting, then you’ll be even more interested by the fact that the Connected Modular 45 range includes 11 different designs. The watch module is available in silver or black and the straps comprise rubber, leather, titanium and ceramic options, which include patented leather and rose gold.
Tag Heuer says that there are over 500 different design combinations, which is mightily impressive, and a serious answer to several fashion designers who have launched an expansive range of hybrid smartwatches recently.
Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 Specifications
In terms of specs, the Connected Modular 45 has a 1.39” AMOLED touchscreen display that’s covered by a 2.5mm sapphire crystal. The case is made from titanium, and the watch comes loaded with a variety of watch faces. The battery life is rated for 24-hours.
The “45” in the name refers to the 45mm case, which is on the large side. The processor is decent though: It has an Intel Atom Z34XX processor paired with 4GB of RAM. These run Android Wear 2.0 smoothly, and crucially, that Atom processor will remain speedy several lifecycles into the future. As you would expect, the Connected Modular 45 has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity, and a 50m water resistance rating to boot. Add all these specifications together, and you have one beastly smartwatch.
