Norwegian wearables maker XPLORA are one of the most underrated kids wearables makers, with their range of kid’s smartwatches being among the best out there with GPS tracking and SOS features. Their range has just gotten a whole lot better with the launch of the XPLORA 2, although availability is limited to the US.
The Xplora 2 is not a successor to the original Xplora - it was developed with Elkjøp who wanted a SIM-FREE version of the original XPLORA. It has GPS and Wi-Fi for accurate location tracking and an SOS function, so kids can get in touch with their parents if they need help. The Xplora 2 places a call to the top emergency contact and cycles through emergency numbers if no one answers until it gets someone to pick up the phone.
Two-way text message (SMS) functionality also features, allowing parents and their children to communicate with each other quickly. Parents can setup geo-boundaries for their kid, so they get notified if their kid wanders outside, for example, the neighbourhood. Amazon Alexa is also integrated, which parents can use to access a variety of interesting features.
These include identifying the location of the wearer and loading up a snapshot of their child’s daily activity such as steps and calories burned. This is a particularly interesting feature because it will give parents insight into the activities of their children, which as we all know are shrouded in mystery much of the time.
In the coming months, XPLORA says children will also be able to access Alexa from their XPLORA 2. This means as long as they are connected to Wi-Fi, they will be able to access content and get answers to questions quickly.
The XPLORA 2’s child-friendly interface is designed for ages 5 up, so it’s very simple to use and wrap your head around. Every kid should be able to pick it up and play with it, just like a smartphone or tablet computer. Also, the smartwatch has been designed to be durable with a shock-friendly plastic case and rubber strap. It’s IPX4 rated, which means the XPLORA 2 is good for showering with and washing hands.
