Google’s Wear OS update ‘H’ promises better battery life

Back in September Google rolled out a new Wear OS update. It brought with it wholesale changes to the notification system and shortcuts, markedly improving how these features are navigated and visualised on screen.

Google’s next Wear OS update, ‘H’, is lined up for release soon with Google saying it’ll appear across devices “in the coming months”. It’s nowhere near as big an update as the beast in September but it could be just as important.

Battery life

‘H’ will introduce a new battery saver mode that can shut down all a smartwatch’s connectivity suite. Activated below 10%, it promises to stretch an extra few hours from your smartwatch in return for making it ‘just a watch’.

Another new feature of ‘H’ is improved movement or body detection. This will improve the performance of sleep mode. If a smartwatch detects no movement, then after 30 minutes it can enter ‘deep sleep mode’ to conserve power.

Both these features can be toggled on and off in the settings.

Smart resume and better power management

‘H’ will also introduce a new feature called ‘Smart App Resume’ which’ll let you pick up from where you left off in any app without it reloading. Apps will pause when you leave them only to reload when you reopen them. Simple.

The last change ‘H’ brings is better power management. You will now be able to power down your device by holding the power button, as opposed to digging through the settings menu for the “power off” option. Holding down the power button will now allow you to select “power off” or “restart” from the display.

No official date has been revealed for the ‘H’ rollout, but when Google says “in the coming months” they usually mean it. So, keep your eyes peeled.
