Huawei launches the Huawei Watch GT Active and Elegant

by in News .

The first-generation Huawei Watch (launched 2015) was one of the best smartwatches on the market at the time. The second-generation Huawei Watch 2 (launched 2017) was, and still is, one of the best smartwatches on the market today - especially the Sport version with its neat ceramic bezel and sporty design.

What we’re saying is Huawei has a track record for launching brilliant smartwatches, and they’ve announced two new ones for 2019. The Huawei Watch GT Active and Huawei Watch GT Elegant are updated versions of last year’s Watch GT.

Huawei Watch GT Active and Huawei Watch GT Elegant

The Huawei Watch GT Active and Huawei Watch GT Elegant are exactly the same smartwatches as last year’s Watch GT but with new designs. The GT Active is a 46mm watch while the GT Elegant is a 42mm watch.

The GT Active has a 2-week battery life in energy saving mode which accounts for heart-rate tracking being on for 90 minutes each week. That’s impressive. The GT Elegant has a 1-week battery life because it has a smaller battery.

The GT Elegant is available in Magic Pearl White and Tahitian Magic Black Pearl. Both models have a ceramic bezel. The GT Active is available in Black only. Both look snazzy but we’re a fan of the smaller model this time around.

Huawei says the GT Active Edition is fitted with a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels, while the Elegant Edition is fitted with a 1.2-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 390 x 390 pixels.

Unlike the Huawei Watch 2 which runs Google’s Wear OS, the Huawei Watch GT runs Huawei’s proprietary operating system LiteOS and therefore so too do the GT Active and GT Elegant models freshly announced. This isn’t a bad thing though because LiteOS runs smoothly with a polished UI. It looks smart, handles notifications well, and although it lacks the apps of Wear OS, it has nearly everything you need built in. In use it is similar to Wear OS but isn’t a knock off. It’s a good OS in its own right and no poorer for experience.

Pricing and availability

The Watch GT Active will cost $280 while the Watch GT Elegant will cost $260. Both will be available directly from Huawei in the summer.
