The Amazfit Verge is Now Available in the U.S.

Huami Amazfit Verge

Back in September, Huami (the world’s second-largest wearables maker) announced a new smartwatch called the Amazfit Verge. The Verge is now available for pre-order in the U.S. for $159, which is plenty cheap for what you get.

The Amazfit Verge runs a new proprietary software developed in collaboration with visual effects company Territory Studio. The new operating system is designed specifically for ease of use, with every feature available within just a few taps.

So, there’s no Wear OS here, but to be honest, we’re rather glad because variety is the spice of life and going with Wear OS is the easiest way to do it. Companies like Huami are real innovators because they dare to do things differently. Anyway, the software looks decent and we can’t wait to try it out for ourselves.

Hardware-wise, the watch looks decent. The Verge has a 1.3-inch AMOLED display with a 360 x 360-pixel resolution. There’s NFC for mobile payments (the Verge comes with a proprietary app for this), GPS and GLONASS for location positioning, and a suite of sensors for accurate, real-time fitness tracking.

Like all the finest smartwatches out there, the Amazfit Verge connects to your smartphone (Android and iPhone compatible, excluding iMessage) and sends push notifications to your wrist. These include notifications for emails, text messages, calendar alerts, and other apps so long as you approve their permission under notifications.

Huami says the Verge will track 10+ different sports including running, cycling, tennis, soccer, skiing and walking, with automatic activity detection. It tracks steps automatically and also your sleep, being able to recognize the difference between light sleep, deep sleep and awake phases to give you an accurate assessment.

Interestingly, the Amazfit Verge should receive an over-the-air update in the next few months which will bring Amazon Alexa integration to it. This is handy because right now, the Verge doesn’t have an AI assistant.

Huami shipped a staggering 18.1 million smart wearable devices in 2017 and is on track to beat that number for 2018 thanks to strong sales of the Amazfit Bip. In 2019, the Verge is the device everyone will be looking at to monitor their progress. With it being priced at just $159, we reckon it’s going to sell like a hot cake.
