Garmin Updates Forerunner Smartwatch Line

Garmin is big on fitness. They always have been, and always will be. All of their smartwatches cater to the fitness market, and their Forerunner line leads the way. No surprises then they’ve updated it for 2019.

The Forerunner line now includes the 45, 45S, 245, 245 Music and 945. These are newly updated to cater to runners more than ever. Each model can analyze your performance and training history to provide greater insight into your runs. The difference between them is in the level of analysis and smartwatch functionality.

Forerunner 45 and 45S

Starting with the entry-level models, the Forerunner 45 has heart-rate monitoring and GPS, while the Forerunner 45S has the same features but in a smaller frame.

The 45S has a 39mm case, while the 45 is 42mm. In terms of fitness, the 45 and 45S track the usual stuff like calories burned, steps, pace and duration. The battery life is rated for 7 days or 13 hours with GPS turned on – not bad at all. Prices start at $199.99.

Forerunner 245 and 245 Music

These mid-range smartwatches add VO2 tracking, running dynamics and post-run health analysis which uses your heartbeat and oxygen saturation to recommend a cool down.

The pulse-ox sensor offers up accurate oxygen saturation readings. The 245 Music simply has more internal storage for up to 500 songs. The battery life is rated for 7 days or 6 hours with GPS and music turned on. Prices start at $299.99.

Forerunner 945

The Forerunner 945 is top dog in the range. It boasts battery life to 14 days in smartwatch mode and 10 hours with GPS and music on.

There’s storage for 1,000 songs, NFC for Garmin Pay and additional running functionality, such as on-watch running dynamics and real-time pulse-ox. Most people will find the 245 is an excellent watch but the 945 will be worth it for serious athletes. It’s priced from $749.99 so commands a big premium over the others.
