Best Smartwatches For Kids & Tweens

8 Best Smartwatches For Kids & Tweens In Dec, 2019

Recently updated on: 6th December 2019

When I was younger, my parents bought me my first watch. It was an analog Timex piece with a fabric strap. The only superpower was its ability to tick away for four whole years before the battery needed replacing. I loved that watch. I was amazed that I could tell the time just by looking at my wrist. I was in love with something that was, to me, high-tech. Now, smartwatches made for kids are a dime a dozen, and it’s very important for parents to make the right decision when it comes to getting a smartwatch for your little one.

Looking for something more specific to GPS tracking? Check out our guide on the best kids GPS watches & trackers in the market right now.

Things To Consider Before Getting a Smartwatch For Your Kids

Fast forward today, watches are more than just a timepiece. Merely telling the time is the least that smartwatches can do. Nowadays, kids can play games on their watch, or sync their watch with their smartphone so they never miss that text from mum or dad telling them to come home because their tea is nearly ready. Most of them even allow you to even set alarms and create to-do lists for your child.

But most importantly, smartwatches are not just about fun and games. As a busy parent with a lot on your plate, you don’t want to tie yourself down with monitoring your child all the time, right? You may be tempted to coop your kids up close to you instead of letting them go out and have fun, but they’ll get bored and end up throwing fits that will make the situation at home worse. If you can’t help but worry about your child, you can always get a smartwatch with GPS monitoring and maybe one that allows you to set up proximity alarms for when your child wanders too far away (also called geofencing)! A piece of advice here is you want to make sure you speak to your child and get their consent before you do this. Honesty is the best policy!

Having a standalone smartwatch for your kid also means that you won’t have to buy a smartphone to stay in touch! Most standalone smartwatches now come with calling features as well, so it’s perfect if you’re trying to limit your child’s screen time. Also, children smartwatches these days usually come with fitness & healthy habit-forming features that can make living healthy fun for any child.

With all the technological advancements that have been happening in the wearable tech space, kids these days have it good. If you are thinking about buying your kid a smartwatch, be it for their birthday, to stay connected, for safety reasons or as a special treat, you’re at the right place! We’ve compiled a guide of the best smartwatches for kids and teenagers for you to consider.

The list will cover the best smartwatches for both safety and entertainment. So, let’s get started!

Top 8 Smartwatches For Kids & Tweens

Garmin Vivofit JR 2 Fitness Tracker

garmin-vivofit-jr-2-fitness-tracking-kids-smartwatch

Best for fitness tracking, parenting assistant with gamified tasks.

The Garmin Vivofit JR 2 has a well-known brand name going for it. It’s also a great kid’s smartwatch where activity tracking is concerned. If you want your child to lead a happier lifestyle, the Garmin Vivofit JR does a great job at gamification. With their mobile app, you will be able to set up a reward program as a parent and let your kid accrue reward points for every task/chore/activity they complete. For example, you could let your kid collect brownie points for every dish they wash, in exchange for a toy they’ve been eyeing on, or extra screen time on weekends. The possibilities are endless! It’s also great if you have multiple children, you can add multiple children on the app and see their activity data when it syncs to your smartphone.

Although it looks a bit basic, this smartwatch is all about durability and nurturing a healthy lifestyle. Think of it as a parent’s personal assistant in caring for your child! It’s swim-proof, shower-proof and shock-resistant, making it a good choice for an active lifestyle. The tiny screen gives your kid a good snapshot of their daily activity, reminders and responsibilities. Best of all, it’s available in a few Disney and Marvel designs and with a stretchy or adjustable strap.

Reasons to buy
– Fitness focused smartwatch
– A great parenting assistant
– Gamified rewards program for keeping track of chores and activities
– Very durable
– Reasonably priced

Reasons not to buy
– Does not come with GPS
– Does not come with call features

Verdict
Value: Good Build: Very Durable and Longlasting Design: Cute, kids will love it. Functionality: Good

The Garmin Vivofit JR 2 is a great casual smartwatch for techie tots and making parenting easier. However, it’s important to take note that it’s features are quite basic for a smartwatch. For instance, it does not come with built-in games, music, GPS and communication features. So, if you’re looking for something more advanced and comes with communication features, this might not be the best fit for your child.

Tick Talk 3.0 Kids Smartwatch

tick-talk-3.0-kids-gps-tracker-phone-smartwatch

Best for GPS tracking and communication

Unlike the Garmin Vivofit JR, TickTalk 3 is a smartwatch that pretty much has all the essentials a smartphone has. This kids’ smartwatch is jam-packed with communication and GPS features. It’s one of the more expensive smartwatches that are made for kids, but for good reason.

Let’s face it, your kid doesn’t need a smartphone. If you want a reliable kid’s smartwatch that can last for years, replace the need for a smartphone and don’t mind paying a premium, look no further because the TickTalk 3 is one of the best in business. TickTalk 3 is the latest-gen smartwatch from TickTalk with 4G/LTE/Wi-Fi connectivity. Considering you get video calling, voice calling, a very accurate GPS tracking feature and historical GPS data recording – it’s a small price to pay.

Let’s dive deeper into the location tracking feature, the TickTalk 3 uses three technologies: Wi-Fi, GPS, and LBS – to provide very accurate locations results. With surprising accuracy, you can track your kid’s location from 100ft to 20-miles using LBS and 10 to 100ft with GPS. The best part is you can track your child’s movements in realtime. This means that if your child wanders too far, you can make a video call and remind the little one to stay close to home.

There’s an IP67 water resistance rating (good for showering and bathing with but please do not use it for swimming). The watch module is wrapped in a durable polycarbonate shell for shock resistance so it can take a beating (that’s important because we know how rowdy kids are)!

Reasons to buy
– Full-featured standalone smartwatch
– Video calls
– 4G and WiFi capabilities
– Historical location data
– Customizable watch bands
– Splash-proof
– Very durable

Reasons not to buy
– Expensive
– Does not come with call features
– Cannot be used for swimming
– No geofencing

Verdict
Value: Good Build: Very Durable Design: Cute and fashionable Functionality: Excellent

With great and reliable video communication features, the Tick Talk 3.0 is a great choice for parents who want easy communications with their children – without having to give them a smartphone. The location tracking feature is also very accurate as it leverages on three different technologies, giving you the peace of mind that your little one is safe. Even though it’s priced higher than most of the other smartwatches on the market, the quality and features that the TickTalk 3.0 provides are second to none.

VTech Kidizoom SmartWatch DX2

vtech-kidizoom-smartwatch-dx2-kids-entertainment-smartwatch

Best for entertainment and media.

The VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX2 is a smartwatch for younger children. Some may question the need for a child as young as five to have a smartwatch. However, the Kidizoom is a fun device that will keep younger children occupied with a plethora of entertainment features.

With this smartwatch, your child can take selfies, videos, play monster-catching games enabled by augmented reality. and watch pre-uploaded videos. This smartwatch does not connect to a phone so it’s a standalone device. VTech recommends it for children aged 5-12 years, however, we can’t really see any child over the age of 9 (or beyond primary school) rocking one of these.

The VTech Kidizoom SmartWatch DX2 can take photos and videos and it’s highly customizable with its library of digital and analog watch faces to choose from. Like the best toys, this one offers a neat learning experience with a feature called ‘Fun Time Master’ which helps children learn to tell the time. Your child can also record their own voice and use the alarm clock, timer and stopwatch functions.

Reasons to buy
– Will keep your kid entertained
– Has a camera for photos and videos
– AR-enabled games
– Customizable watch face
– Very reasonably priced
– Local storage for media

Reasons not to buy
– Cannot be used for swimming
– No GPS and communications

Verdict
Value: Great Build: Okay Design: Cute and customizable Functionality: Good

The Kidizoom Smartwatch DX2 is available in three main colors – Cerise, Green and Blue. The device itself is chunky so there is little risk of it being a choking hazard and the strap has been designed to be childproof. The shortfall in this watch is that it is primarily an entertainment smartwatch with some fitness tracking features built-in. It does not come with GPS and communication features. Overall, if you’re looking for a gift to reward your little one, this is a great smartwatch for younger children.

iGPS Wizard GPS Tracking Phone Smartwatch

iGPS-wizard-4g-phone-smartwatch-gps-tracker

Best for: A cheaper alternative to the TickTalk 3. Just as good for tracking and communicating.

The iGPS Wizard has 4G/LTE connectivity as well as GPS, GNSS, A-GPS and sensors to track your kid’s location and activity down to a tee. One thing that sets it apart is that it lets you set up geofencing (the proximity alarm feature we talked about earlier) and also has voice calling and SMS messaging so you can stay in touch.

Apart from being iOS and Android compatible, the iGPS Wizard also has some really useful features for your little one. With the unique Take Me Home feature, you can set your home address on the watch. If your kid gets lost, just a few clicks and your kid will be able to navigate him or herself back home, just like how Google or Apple maps would!

Like the TickTalk 3, the iGPS Wizard also has LBS which enables you to track your child further than just a few miles. The fitness tracking capabilities on this smartwatch is also very accurate, allowing you to see on your smartphone if they’re getting enough activity.

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides with the iGPS Wizard. Firstly, you don’t get video calling capabilities but that’s usually just a luxury when it comes to communication. Secondly, the iGPS Wizard has a different approach to connectivity. You don’t have to get a SIM card for this smartwatch, but you have to subscribe to the iGPS service that costs $14.95 a month, which includes 300 minutes of talk time, unlimited SMS and unlimited GPS.

Reasons to buy
– Accurate GPS and fitness tracking features
– Has a camera for photos and videos
– AR-enabled games
– Well priced for its features
– Device removal alert
– One-touch SOS call
– Automated emergency contact dialing

Reasons not to buy
– Cannot be used for swimming
– No video call
– Have to subscribe to the iGPS service

Verdict
Value: Excellent Build: Sturdy Design: Suitable for young children Functionality: Fantastic

Unlike some kid’s smartwatches on the market, the iGPS Wizard is very well made. It’s resistant to water splashing and shock so it’s definitely built to last. The price point and features make it an excellent alternative to the TickTalk smartwatch.

Karaforna Kids Phone Smartwatch & GPS Tracker

karaforna-kids-phone-smartwatch-gps-tracker

Best for location tracking, communication, camera, swim-proof and phone replacement.

The Karaforna Kids Smartwatch is one of the best smartwatches in the market because it is the most feature pack of all the ones on this list. The smartwatch series offers GPS location tracking, text messaging and voice calling, allowing you to keep in touch with your kid and track their location. There’s Gorilla Glass on the display to keep it looking like new and a 1.3” touchscreen. The best part is, the smartwatch also comes with a camera and photo album for your kids to document their journeys while traveling!

With the ability for calling, messages, location tracking, one-click SOS calls, geofencing, reminders, schedules and a do not disturb mode which kills all notification sounds (so they don’t get into trouble in school), the Karaforna Kids Smartwatch is a good choice. This smartwatch also comes with a unique remote monitoring feature that allows you to drop in whenever you like and listen to your child’s surroundings but do make sure you let your kids know about this first!

It’s available in several colors but blue and green are our favorites. Most of the time, the Karaforna Kids Smartwatch is available SIM-free so you can choose your own service plan, but it is only compatible with Speedtalk and US mobile. To top it all off, if your kid is a natural swimmer, he or she will definitely love this watch as it comes with IP67 waterproofing, which means it can be submerged in a 1.5m swimming pool for about 30 minutes without damage.

Reasons to buy
– Accurate GPS and fitness tracking features
– Camera feature
– Device removal alert
– Unique remote monitoring feature
– One-touch SOS call
– Geofencing alarms
– Task reminders
– Swimproof

Reasons not to buy
– Very expensive
– Battery life is not great

Verdict
Value: Amazing Build: Robust Design: Modern Functionality: Fantastic

If you’re looking for a feature-rich smartwatch that can stand the test of time, The Karaforna Kids Smartwatch is hands down one of the best children smartwatches in the market. The price is quite steep, but in the smartwatch world, you usually get what you pay for. However, if you think this smartwatch might be too feature-rich for your kid, you might want to consider the TickTalk 3.0 or the iGPS Wizard instead.

LeapFrog LeapBand Smartwatch

leapfrog-leapband-kids-smartwatch

Best for parenting assistant, nurturing good habits and entertainment

The LeapFrog LeapBand doesn’t have GPS or phone calls because it’s aimed at children under the age of 6. Just like the VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX2, the LeapFrog LeapBand is a smartwatch for learning and development, with activity tracking, audio challenges and a point rewards program for getting stuff done. However, it does not have any safety or GPS features built-in. If you’re looking for GPS tracking, this is not the smartwatch you should get as this is meant to be a parental assistant in nurturing an active lifestyle and healthy habits. As a parent, the best feature is that you can schedule playtime, challenge and chore reminders via the LeapFrog connect app.

For the techie tot, some of the best features include the virtual pet (Tamagotchi, anyone?) where he or she can choose a pet panda, unicorn, cat, penguin, dog or even a little robot to take care of. Your child can keep their pet happy and earn new rewards for doing so. There are a few preloaded games and you can connect two devices together for multiplayer action, and no batteries are required because it has a built-in rechargeable battery.

Reasons to buy
– Very affordable
– Rich with entertainment features
– Parental assistant
– Nurtures good habits and an active lifestyle
– Great for learning and development
– Multiplayer support

Reasons not to buy
– No GPS and communication
– Fragile design
– Activity tracker not very accurate

Verdict
Value: Good Build: Quite Fragile Design: Kiddy, suitable for younger children Functionality: Okay

All in all, the LeapFrog LeapBand is a great toy for your little one. This smartwatch will keep kids entertained for months and will help them develop great living habits. However, if you’re looking for a feature-rich smartphone with security features, unlike the next item on the list, the LeapBand is not a good option.

LG GizmoGadget Kids Smartwatch

Best for great UI, communication, fitness, security and location tracking.

The LG GizmoGadget is, in our opinion, one of the best-looking kid’s smartwatches on the market today. It is made with your child’s security in mind and is one of the best in the market. The smartwatch comes with a sleek black screen, soft silicone band and silver case look the part, and it also gets LED status indicators that clearly display battery status, call status and signal strength. It is unfortunately quite bulky in design so it may not fit well for children under 8 years old.

Coming in blue and pink, the LG GizmoGadget offers on-demand location tracking and two-way calling, with the ability for you to add up to four authorized telephone numbers so that your child can call you if they need help. All of this is managed through the Gizmo Hub App, which is free to download for GizmoGadget customers, and the watch itself is incredibly easy to use even for young children, thanks to one-button controls.

The LG GizmoGadget is one of the best smartwatches for kids if you are looking for a smartwatch that offers fitness tracking, call and GPS functionality. It offers a 9-day battery life and lets you set GPS safety zones and notifications. It’s important to note that the LG GizmoGadget only works with Verizon. This includes all the minutes your child needs for 2-way voice calling. The downside is, the GPS tracking feature is only available on-demand when you request for it via the Gizmo Hub app, which means there will be no historical data on your child’s whereabouts.

Reasons to buy
– Accurate fitness tracking
– Great features
– Security & GPS capabilities
– Comfortable
– 2-way calling
– Stylish design that your kid will love

Reasons not to buy
– Quite bulky, not suitable for children under 5
– Not water resistant
– Only works with Verizon
– Very expensive

Verdict

Value: Not Great Build: Sturdy Design: Modern looking Functionality: Great

For a kids’ smartwatch, it’s hard to top the LG GizmoGadget. The downside is that it is extremely expensive for a smartwatch meant for children. But if you’re looking for something that your child will not outgrow, you can’t go wrong with this well-built kids smartwatch.

Kurio Watch 2.0 Kids Entertainment Smartwatch

kurio-watch-2.0-kids-smartwatch-gaming

Best for fun and games and children aged 6 to 10.

The Kurio Watch 2.0 takes a less serious approach to the kid’s smartwatch. It comes with an in-built camera and 20 pre-loaded apps as well as games, photo filters and photo frames, so your kid can have fun anytime, anywhere. The design is also somewhat customizable with two interchangeable bands that your child can use to match his or her style. It’s also great if you have multiple children because, with the Kurio Watch 2.0, your kids can play multiplayer games with each other on their own separate watch!

There are voice and video calling as well as text messaging functionality, and 256MB of internal memory and a Micro SD card slot for additional storage of photos and chats. If you’re using an Android phone, you can even send emoji texts to each other from your phone to your kid’s watch! Another cool feature on the Kurio Watch 2.0 is the ability to put your child’s vital information like blood type and allergies so that should the need arise, ER can quickly identify and diagnose anything bad that might have happened to your kid.

For its price, we think it’s spectacular that this watch comes with a lot of useful features like calendar, fitness tracking, camera for photo and videos, music player, calculator and many more. The watch itself is rugged, scratch-resistant and splash-proof. It’s available in light blue, pink, red, and a sort of twilight which is our favorite. There’s no GPS connectivity but if you don’t care about that, the Kurio 2.0 is great fun and a great choice for your kid.

Reasons to buy
– Fitness tracking capabilities
– On-device media storage
– Comfortable
– Multiplayer gaming
– Scratch and water-resistant
– 2-way calling and texting via Bluetooth
– Stylish design that your kid will love

Reasons not to buy
– Quite bulky, not suitable for children under 5
– Not swim-proof
– Not compatible with iPhone
– Not very durable
– Voice call quality is not the best
– No GPS

Verdict
Value: Great Build: Quite fragile Design: Kiddish looking Functionality: Fantastic

With these features, the fact that it is priced below $40 makes it an absolute steal. However, if you’re using an iPhone, take note that this watch is not compatible with iOS so you may have to look at the other options if that is the case. It’s also not very durable, does not come with safety features but is a great all-round entertainment device for techie tots.

Fitbit Ace 2

fitbit-ace-2-kids-fitness-sleep-tracking-smartwatch

Best for nurturing good habits, fitness and sleep tracking

The Fitbit Ace 2 takes a fitness-focused approach to the kid’s smartwatch. While it does not come with GPS support, the Fitbit Ace 2 incorporates Fitbit’s activity and sleep monitoring features that are extremely accurate. It comes with bedtime reminder features and silent alarms so it can help develop great sleeping habits (very rare these days).

The smartwatch also has an in-built challenges feature that allows your little one to earn badges for certain achievements they’ve completed. If your kid has other friends using Fitbit Ace 2, they can also issue fitness challenges and send messages to each other – which helps promote a healthier, more active lifestyle.

The Fitbit Ace 2 is also great if your kid is a born swimmer. The watch itself is swim-proof up to 50 meters in-depth, which is the highest on this list. It’s available in Grape, Watermelon and Night Sky color schemes so there’s something for everyone. You might think that battery life would be sub-par with so many useful features, but the Fitbit Ace 2 has a very respectable 5-day battery life.

Reasons to buy
– World-class fitness tracking capabilities
– Affordable
– Comfortable & stylish
– Sleep monitoring
– Swim-proof
– Helps promote good sleeping patterns
– Great battery life

Reasons not to buy
– No communications
– No GPS

Verdict
Value: Very Good Build: Long-lasting Design: Stylish and cool looking Functionality: Great

Coming from one of the top fitness tracker manufacturers in the world, the high quality and powerful features should not come as a surprise. If you’re looking for an affordable smartwatch that promotes a better overall lifestyle and don’t need security and location features to go with it, look no further because the Fitbit Ace 2 is the best of its kind.

ProGrace Kids Smartwatch

Prograce-kids-fitness-tracker-smartwatch

Best for all-round use, but no GPS tracking. Fantastic value.

At the time of writing this guide, the ProGrace kids smartwatch is one of the best kids smartwatches in the market, especially if your child has not had a smartwatch before. Why do we say that? Simple, it’s a great all-round watch and best of all, very cheap. Starting at below $30, this smartwatch comes with a plethora of features.

There’s an audio music player built-in, FM radio, a camera, flashlight, activity tracker and comes with multiple games that will keep your child entertained for weeks and even months on end. If you want to make the most out of the watch, you would have to add on an SD card into the watch so your kid can indulge in taking selfies and listen to music. It also comes with a larger than usual battery life, at 600mAh – your kid can go about 2 weeks in a single charge.

Reasons to buy
– Surprisingly accurate fitness tracking
– Camera built-in
– FM radio
– Great battery life
– Very cheap
– Helps promote exercise

Reasons not to buy
– No communications
– No GPS
– Needs an SD card to maximize utility

Verdict
Value: Fantastic Build: Okay, not great Design: Modern looking, your kid will love it Functionality: Great

This watch is available in pink and blue colors which makes it quite limited. Also, the ProGrace kids smartwatch does not come with GPS features so it also doesn’t have geofencing capabilities. If that’s not a priority, we highly recommend this watch if you’re looking to impress your son or daughter.

So, which smartwatch should I get for my kid?

All the ones listed in this list are all great options. We’ve scoured the internet for all the options and made sure that there’s something for every scenario here! So at the end of the day, it really depends on what kind of features you need.

If your priority is to foster healthy habits in your kid, Garmin Vivofit JR 2, ProGrace and Fitbit Ace 2 are both excellent options. They’re really good in this space.

Looking to keep your child safe? Be prepared to shell out a little bit more. For this, iGPS Wizard is solid in the first place, TickTalk 3.0 is also a great option but we think it is a little bit lacking in the security department.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a fun and entertaining smartwatch for your child, we highly recommend getting the Kurio 2, ProGrace or VTech Kidizoom DX2 Smartwatch.

We hope this guide helps! If you’ve had any experience with any of these smartwatches, we’d love to hear from you. Leave us a comment down below.

  1. Thanks for the reviews – found it very helpful. Looking for a smartwatch with GPS Tracking, geo-fencing, school mode – to turn off notifications, voice calls. To be used internationally – so we would put in our own SIM – and ideally 4G compatible. Also want an added feature – that we could DROP IN (listen in on the kids) if required. What do you suggest?

    1. Happy to help! The TickTalk 3.0 has a Do Not Disturb feature. For the drop-in feature, FindMyKids has a pretty good watch for that. Make sure you check with your kid beforehand though!
